Isaac Hayes a Papa
At least there'll be no question as to which cartoon characters won't be gracing the walls of the nursery.
Isaac Hayes and wife Adjowa welcomed son Nana Kwadjo Hayes into the world Apr. 10, according to spokesman Rob Moore. The baby boy tipped the scales at eight pounds, five ounces.
As Tom Cruise's Suri before him, the unusual tot name requires some translation. Per the Associated Press, Nana is the Ghanaian word for "king," while Kwadjo means "boy born on Monday." (Bypass the calendars: Apr. 10 did indeed fall on a Monday.)
The Shaft singer likely gained inspiration for the moniker during one of his goodwill trips to the African country. In 1992, Hayes was crowned an honorary king of Ghana's Ada district thanks to his humanitarian deeds.
The new stork delivery is the fourth son for the 63-year-old soul man, and his first with wife Adjowa, with whom he tied the knot in May 2005. He also has children from previous relationships, including a past marriage to Mignon Harley.
The baby news caps off a year which has already brought the Grammy winner a certain amount of notoriety.
Last January, the soul legend checked himself into an undisclosed Memphis hospital to reportedly be treated for high blood pressure and exhaustion. However, rumors quickly swirled that the self-proclaimed Black Moses had been incapacitated by a stroke, not weariness, particularly after his very public decampment from South Park and his ensuing, somewhat robotic statements on the matter.
In early March, Hayes announced that he was requesting to be released from his contract with the Comedy Central show due to its "inappropriate ridicule of religious communities."
Though Hayes failed to point to any specific episodes for his abrupt departure, show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker were quick to offer their opinion on which storyline likely triggered the dispute, naming a November 2005 episode titled "Trapped in the Closet," which satirized Scientology's practices and beliefs.
"This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology," Stone said at the time. "He has no problem?and he's cashed plenty of checks?with our shows making fun of Christians."
The network released the disgruntled actor from his contract, though it was not Chef's last appearance on the series.
In the 10th season premiere, which aired just a week after the brouhaha hit the headlines, Chef was still voiced by Hayes, but cobbled together from previously recorded dialogue. In the episode, the cafeteria worker was brainwashed by a group of child molesters only to be ultimately struck by lightning, impaled, mauled, shot and turned into a robotic monster.
While Hayes had no comment on his character's treatment, a rep from his company did issue one statement: The singer was "totally wrapped up in his baby."
