Iron Giant

I love poker almost as much as movies. If I could play while watching Raising Arizona, I think I would explode. So, when I learned that the World Poker Tour 5th Annual Invitational Tournament was coming up at Commerce Casino, where Don Cheadle was scheduled to throw down, I was determined to get in.

The key word, however, is invitational. I don’t sign autographs at grocery stores, and my poker buddies will confirm I am not a pro. But get this. I told WPT about Reel Girl and they gave me an invitation. Omigod. Can you say grateful?

Unlike so many Hollywood soirees with expected guest lists that don’t pan out, this party was packed, as promised. First up, my 60-second chat with Jon Favreau. Swingers. The IFC show Dinner for Five. Hello, Made. Oooh! The Break-Up! And next, he’s directing his most high-profile, big-budget extravaganza to date, Iron Man, with Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges. Scary project, oh yeah, and maybe that’s why when we spoke, John struck me as a kid with a chem final who’s praying for a snow day. See for yourself:

So, Iron Man, Iron Man!
We’re knuckling down. We’re about to go to work. This is my last little distraction before we start going on Monday. So, hopefully high-stakes poker will take my mind off of what I’ve been obsessing on for the last 10 months.

Wait, today is Saturday. Iron Man begins Monday. And this tournament lasts three days…
I should be so lucky. If it goes to the third day, the movie’s got problems. I’m pretty much banking on the fact that I won’t make it past tomorrow. It’s rare that a celebrity makes it to the final table.

Rare but possible. Did you tell the studio about your weekend plans?
No, I didn’t tell them about it. I’m assuming it’s not going to happen.

It didn’t happen. But then, it didn’t happen for anyone except The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes, who’s at the Final Table today. Good luck, Nick. Anyway, I wish Favreau was still in it, too, just so he could call up Paramount and be like, “Um...you know that $75 million movie we talked about? Can that, like, wait?”

More with Favreau and other players coming soon.
