Imus Irritates Doctor

Don Imus is in trouble for allegedly putting a little too much "shock" in his shock-jock shtick.

Howard Stern's radio nemesis is facing a slander suit from a doctor who worked at Imus' New Mexico ranch caring for sick children.

Dr. Howard Allen Pearson says his reputation was trashed by Imus, who told listeners on his Imus in the Morning show that Pearson was "one of the worst doctors in the world" and "did not care if children suffered."

Pearson, who is seeking unspecified damages, also claims Imus threatened him with a gun and knife last July at the Imus Ranch for Children following an incident involving one of the sick kids.

The Harvard-educated doctor says there was a misunderstanding about a sick child who was experiencing chest pains. Imus felt it was an emergency and was livid when the doctor chose to walk to the infirmary rather than hitch a ride with Imus' wife. Pearson says it was a routine visit and the little girl was fine after receiving pain medicine.

Imus apparently disagreed. Pearson says he was given a verbal lashing from the radio host, who punctuated his argument with a gun and knife, while saying, "I'll kick your ass off my ranch."

Imus is also sticking to his guns about the incident. He confirmed his opinion of the doctor to the Associated Press and called the lawsuit "disgraceful."

He says the 16-year-old girl in question, who has since passed away, "had been up all night in abject agony and pain. The place was a quarter mile away and [Pearson] refused to get in the truck."

For now, it's up to the courts to sort out. The suit, which names Imus, NBC, MSNBC and Westwood One Inc. as defendants, was filed Friday in a Manhattan Supreme Court. Pearson is seeking unspecified damages for "distress, shock, humiliation and economic loss."

Reps for NBC and MSNBC, the latter of which televises the radio show, offered no comment on the suit. Westwood One officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

This is the third ranch-related incident that has plagued Imus in recent years. In 2004, Nichole C. Mallette, 24, a former nanny, sued the radio personality for allegedly running her off his ranch in the middle of the night and then trashing her on his show. And in 2000, Imus was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, broken ribs and a broken collarbone after being thrown from a horse.
