Illness Halts Brando's "Scary" Cameo

Just two days after director Keenen Ivory Wayans told E! Online that Marlon Brando had begun work on the set of Scary Movie 2, producers say "continued illness" has now forced the screen legend to bow out.

Dimension Films announced Tuesday that the 77-year-old actor "is unable to complete the filming of his cameo role" in the Wayans' brother's goofball horror sequel.

"Unfortunately, due to his health issues and unavailability, we must now recast his role," says Dimension spokeswoman Elizabeth Clark. "We wish Mr. Brando a speedy recovery."

Brando, out of the hospital after falling ill with pneumonia, began work Saturday on his much-hyped cameo for Scary Movie 2, Wayans confirmed to E! Online movie columnist Anderson Jones. Shooting was initially postponed two weeks ago, when Brando checked himself into a Los Angeles-area hospital.

And on Monday, all signs pointed to Brando being healthy enough to complete his cameo duties. After the actor began work Saturday, a Dimension Films spokesman said Brando was expected to finish his work this weekend, and principal photography would wrap up sometime early next week.

The spokesman, however, could not comment specifically on when Brando was released from the hospital, or about his overall state of health. (Brando does not have a publicist, and his agent has refused to make a statement.)

With the film due in theaters July 4 weekend, shooting couldn't be postponed any longer, says Jeff Raymond, the film's unit publicist. "Unfortunately, his health was just unpredictable to the point that production had to make the decision to move on," he said.

Brando's hospitalization came almost immediately after the actor surprised everyone by not only agreeing to the comedy cameo--but also scoring a reported $2 million for just a few days of work. Though not averse to taking huge sums of cash for unlikely cameos (witness his $4 million payday for 1978's Superman), the star of The Godfather and A Streetcar Named Desire also apparently warmed to the idea of playing a priest who presides over an exorcism during the film's opening scenes.

The Dimension Films sequel to last summer's blockbuster stars Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Tori Spelling, Chris Elliott and Andy Richter, among others.
