Stars Dig Getting Down 'n' Dirty for the Greater Good

Lance Bass Mike Rozman/E! Networks

RSVPs:  Lance Bass, Lauren "L.C." Conrad and an Office trio
When:  Apr. 4
Where:  TreePeople, Beverly Hills

I've traded in my stilettos for a pair of Converse, because this week, Hollywood Party Girl is going green. In January, E! teamed up with the Environmental Media Association (EMA) to create the first ever Golden Green Party. They promised that a tree would be planted for every attendee. Even though Mother Nature had dished out an über-chilly evening, 800 people braved the cold for the eco-friendly bash. And that means...800 trees! Today, E! and EMA are following through with their promise with a Tree-Planting Ceremony at TreePeople's L.A.  headquarters.

A 10 a.m. event is a rarity for Hollywood Party Girl, but the crisp morning air is a nice break from our usual smoke-infested clubs. Yet for some, the early wakeup call was too much. "I tried to get Audrina up," Lauren "L.C." Conrad says of her Hills costar. "But she was too tired." Granted, the girls did just get back from their season wrap party in NYC, but that didn't stop Lauren from donning capris and a Chanel purse—perfect casual chic for one of her favorite childhood pastimes. "I told my mom I was coming to plant, and she was like, 'You love planting,' " Lauren says, after taking a sip of Red Bull. "Apparently, she used to take me to Home Depot every week to let me choose flowers and plant them in the garden."

TreePeople's 45-acre eco-tainment spread way up on Mulholland Drive is a huge garden filled with wildflowers and tree varieties. "So, who's going to get poison oak today?" jokes Days of Our Lives' Bryan Dattilo. The soap star should be used to the outdoors by now. His character is planning a green wedding with fiancée Sami (Alison Sweeney). "We're going to have potted flowers instead of cut flowers, hybrid vehicles getting everyone to the event—and I even wear a hemp jacket!" he says, before we reach the top of the hill. After the five-minute hike, my shortness of breath makes me realize how out of shape I am. Yikes.

And I'm not the only one. "I haven't worked out since last March," says Rockmond "C-Note" Dunbar. Looking at those muscly arms, I'd never guess the former star of Prison Break (yes, he's off the show) has a different trick to staying fit. "I just finished a body-cleanse detoxing," he tells me. "You take 25 herbs a day to clean out your body, only eat raw foods—and it works. I feel amazing." He looks amazing, too, in a T-shirt reading, "Trust Me, I'm a Doctor," to promote his new TNT hospital drama ever so subtly, in which he'll play a transplant surgeon. From now on, I'm calling C-Note Dr. McHunky.

Also promoting her show while doing good is The Office's Angela Kinsey, who's sporting a Dunder-Mifflin cap to shade her fair skin from the rising rays. With The Office finally back on the schedule, I'm wondering if Scranton is planning to hop on the green bandwagon. "Maybe the green Jell-o," Angela's costar Oscar Nuñez jokes, referring to Jim's calculator in the show's Jell-o prank. "But as far as conserving stuff, no—it's a paper company."

"Michael Scott probably wouldn't know eco if he found it with both hands," Angela adds.  "But outside of Dunder-Mifflin, a lot of us drive hybrids. And all around our set, we have recycle bins." Plus, Oscar, Angela and Jan (Melora Hardin) are all taking a day off work to plant some oaks, one of Oscar's favorite trees.

The celebs, now all wearing their organic tees, gather around TreePeople founder Andy Lipkis for a short speech to kick off the ceremony. "Think of what you're doing today as acupuncture for the earth," he says, before splitting the volunteers into five teams. "I feel like I'm at camp," Lance Bass smiles and joins Oscar, Kim Possible's Christy Carlson Romano and American Heiress' Race Owen on hillside.

The groups quickly get to work, digging holes with golden shovels. While Lance's team struggles when they hit a rock, L.C.'s team moves ahead at full force with strong men like McHunky and Starship Troopers' Casper Van Dien doing the grunt work. Despite the obstacle, Lance and Co. finish first. "Not that it's a competition, but our group was better than the others," Oscar jokes. Michael Scott sure unleashed a competitive streak in his employees.

When all the oaks are planted, the groups join hands and welcome their newborns to the world. "We named our tree Dibble, honoring it after this dibble stick" E!'s Ben Lyons tells me, referring to the instrument used to remove air bubbles from the soil. "We had a lot of fun with the dibble stick." If you're ever in the Los Angeles area, you can visit Dibble and his tree pals Magnus, Sexy Daylights, Maclovio and Emma (a name Lance concocted from EMA—get it?). The rest of the 795 trees will be planted in the Santa Monica Mountains throughout the year, which just goes to show you: Sometimes, if you party enough, good things can happen.
