Hunter S. Thompson's Bad Break
Call it fear and limping in Honolulu.
Legendary gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson is on the mend after being hospitalized with a broken leg in Hawaii, according to print and broadcast reports.
The 66-year-old author of such acclaimed works as The Rum Diary and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which was translated into a 1998 film starring Johnny Depp, was covering Sunday's Honolulu Marathon as a columnist for ESPN.com when the accident happened.
Thompson fractured his leg last Friday when he slipped on the bathroom floor of his Waikiki hotel room. He was taken to a local hospital where the bone was stabilized. Thompson is due to return to his home in Aspen, where he's expected to undergo surgery to repair the break.
The eccentric and outspoken writer, famous for fueling his feverish imagination with massive amounts of drugs and alcohol, was supposed to accompany Josh Hartnett in the pace vehicle for the annual marathon.
Hartnett's set to costar in an adaptation of The Rum Diary, Thompson's recounting of his adventures working for an English newspaper in Puerto Rico back in 1959. Once again, Depp will play the writer and Nick Nolte is also in the cast. Benicio Del Toro will make his directing debut on the film, which is slated to begin in the next few weeks.
While visiting Honolulu, Thompson was also spotted hanging with actor-director Sean Penn, who was reportedly scouting locations and meeting with the author to discuss their plans to adapt his cult classic The Curse of Lono to the big screen.
