"Howdy Doody" Host Dies

"Buffalo Bob" Smith, the man who made "Howdy Doody Time" the right time for baby boomers in the 1940s and 1950s, died today of cancer. He was 80.

The iconic kiddie TV-show host passed away in a hospital near his North Carolina home.

The Howdy Doody Show ran for 13 years during the Golden Era of the tube.

In addition to the cowboy-clad Smith and that redheaded dummy Doody, Doodyville residents included: Dilly Dally, Chief Thunderdud and the dear Flubadub.

Clarabell the Clown (played by future Captain Kangaroo star Bob Keeshan) was another resident in good standing.

The famed Peanut Gallery closed shop in 1960.

Columnist Bob Greene once called Smith's Doody work possibly "the most important cultural landmark for my generation."

The Buffalo, New York, native (yes, that's where he got name) got his start in radio. He segued to TV in 1947 when NBC was looking for a body to host a kid's show on its newfangled network--the rest is Doody history.

In the 1970s, Smith and his wooden sidekick toured college campuses, indulging preternaturally nostalgic boomers.

"I always liked kids," Smith once said. "You can't kid a kid. They know right away if you like them or not."

Survivors include a wife, three children and three grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned.
