And as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the socially conscious hip-hopsters apparently couldn't resist taking a sly dig at Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann, who appeared on last night's show.
So what did they do?
As Bachman walked out, the band played the song "Lyin' Ass Bitch!"—a ditty from legendary ska-punk outfit Fishbone.
OK, so it's not exactly the warmest of welcomes, but little could be discerned of the actual chorus save the "la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la" refrain—and Bachmann apparently didn't seem fazed (that is, if she even knew what they were playing).
The Roots' drummer and cofounder Questlove didn't exactly mince words about the group's intentions however, hinting before the episode that they had something planned.
"Aight late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake. ask around cause i aint tweeting title," he tweeted.
He later included a link to the Fishbone album on the iTunes music store, adding: "take a guess. buy the record anyway. its classic and should be in your vocabulary."
A rep for Bachmann and NBC could not be reached for comment.
While news of the slam lit up the Twitterverse, one person who probably wasn't too thrilled by it was the Grammy winners' boss.
"@questlove is grounded," Fallon tweeted.
We're guessing he's joking.
