"Housewives" Cruel to "Elvis"

King-sized isn't what it used to be.

The first part of CBS' Elvis miniseries was dwarfed Sunday night by ABC's Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy.

In a 9-11 p.m. matchup, the Elvis Presley biopic shook up 13.9 million, compared to the 22.5 million averaged by the denizens of Wisteria Lane and Seattle Grace Hospital, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Individually, Desperate Housewives (26.1 million viewers) ranked second for the TV week ended Sunday; the just-renewed Grey's Anatomy (18.9 million), eighth; and Elvis, 17th.

The numbers weren't bad for the Presley project, they just weren't Presley-esque.

A generation ago, in February 1979, an ABC TV movie on the rock god, also titled Elvis, was a bona fide event, playing to a packed house of 43 million.

Of course, network ratings aren't what they used to be, either. In 1979, Elvis's Super Bowl-esque numbers weren't enough to snag the show most watched honors. In the weekly rankings, it placed sixth, one ignoble notch below the ABC sitcom Angie.

The 1979 Elvis starred Kurt Russell. The 2005 Elvis, which concludes Wednesday, installed the Irish-born Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as the Memphis-bred hipster.

Elsewhere:

ABC's Primetime Live report on Corey Clark's "Paulatics" was watched by 13.7 million (18th place) who will never, ever get that hour of their lives back.
The real Fallen Idol? Fox's American Idol, with Tuesday's edition "falling" to fourth place (24.4 million) and Wednesday's "slipping" to third (25.4 million). Typically, Tuesday's Idol is higher rated than Wednesday's. Credit for the pumped-up results show goes to Scott Savol's much-anticipated ouster and/or the publicity surrounding Primetime Live, which aired a half-hour after the episode.
The more was the merrier for NBC's two-hour Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (13th place, 16.5 million) featuring cross-over appearances by the cast of Law & Order: Trial by Jury.
On its own, Trial by Jury (39th place, 9.8 million) was no SVU.
Alias star Jennifer Garner has a baby on board; her ABC show (42nd place, 9.2 million) could use some more viewers on board.
The season- and perhaps series-closing episode of CBS' Judging Amy acquitted itself nicely--33rd place, 10.8 million.
The broadcast premiere of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (56th place, 7.5 million) gave a lift to ABC's typically dead Saturday night.
Fresh-from-rehab TV host Pat O'Brien played excerpts of his voice mail messages on Dr. Phil's CBS prime-time special Behind the Headlines. Given the results (59th place, 7.3 million), perhaps he should have played a voice mail from Paula Abdul instead.
The penultimate new Star Trek: Enterprise on UPN (96th place, 3 million) didn't do as lousy as the rest of the episodes.

Overall, CBS won the May sweeps week in viewers (13.2 million); Fox claimed the title in the 18-49 demo.

Fox was second in viewers (10 million), while CBS was second in the demo race.

ABC (9.9 million) pulled down a pair of close third-place finishes; NBC (9.7 million) pulled up lame with a pair of not-as-close fourth-place finishes.

The WB edged out UPN, 3.32 million to 3.3 million.

Here's a rundown of the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

1. CSI, CBS, 26.6 million viewers
2. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 26.1 million viewers
3. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 25.4 million viewers
4. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 24.4 million viewers
5. CSI: Miami, CBS, 20.7 million viewers
6. Survivor: Palau, CBS, 20.1 million viewers
7. Everybody Loves Raymond, CBS, 19.4 million viewers
8. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 18.9 million viewers
9. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 17.93 million viewers
10. Without a Trace, CBS, 17.92 million viewers
