Holy Dealbreaker, John Goodman?

John Goodman's decision not to don a papal hat for a film role has earned him a new suit.

A German production company has filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against the actor for allegedly reneging on a deal to star in the upcoming film Pope Joan, which was slated to begin shooting next month.

According to court documents filed Monday by Constantin Film Produktion, the erstwhile Roseanne star agreed to a $500,000 payday to appear in the film, but later backed out of the deal.

Constantin contends that it reached an oral agreement with Goodman's representatives in February with regard to casting him as Pope Sergius in the film. Then on Mar. 14, a rep for the actor made contact via email to inform the company that Goodman no longer wanted to tackle the project.

The company claims Goodman's decision to abscond from the film has cost the production at least $3 million in damages so far, with an exact amount to be determined at trial.

"[Goodman] knew or should have known that Constantin would rely on this promise by not casting or seeking to cast any other actors for the role of Pope Sergius, and by continuing to spend, and to commit to spend, significant sums on preproduction activities with an expected start date for principal photography on or around May 15, 2007," the company contends in its court documents.

Goodman's spokesman, Stan Rosenfield called the lawsuit "frivolous."

"There were talks about Mr. Goodman participating in the Pope Joan project, although no agreement was ever reached," Rosenfield said in a statement to tmz.com.

The upcoming film is based on the legend of a woman who supposedly disguised herself as a man and served as pope for about two years in the ninth century.

The reign of the so-called Pope Joan was even recorded by medieval monks in histories of the times, though today the Catholic Church dismisses her existence as fiction.

Assuming the derailed project manages to go forward without Goodman, German actor Franka Potente will portray the female pope. A 1972 feature by the same name starred Liv Ullmann in the title role.

Meanwhile, Goodman will be appearing opposite Steve Carrell in the upcoming comedy Evan Almighty, the sequel to 2003's Bruce Almighty, slated to hit theaters in June. He will also be generating buzz for Jerry Seinfeld's animated film, Bee Movie, due for release in November.
