The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, did more than level the Twin Towers a decade ago. Americans felt the changes on a massive scale—the deaths, the ensuing wars, the crackdown on civil rights at home.

Even our most frivolous moments were affected. While celebrities lined up to honor the dead and aid the living, manning phones at telethons and visiting rescue crews at Ground Zero, the rest of the entertainment industry reinvented itself to reflect our new anxieties.

It's impossible to list every way that the attacks remolded American entertainment. But we've assembled a timeline illustrating just a slice of how much 9/11 altered the worlds of film, television, song and celebrity. Take a look:
