High 5: Maroon Swoons Charts

It's never too soon for Maroon.

Five years after its smash hit debut, Maroon 5 colored the charts again with one of the year's top bows, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The album tallied 430,000 for the week ended Sunday, per Nielsen SoundScan, to register the second biggest sales week of 2007.

The group's previous single-week sales best, 138,000 copies, came during Songs About Jane's two-year-plus chart run. Thanks to hits like "This Love," "Sunday Morning" and "She Will Be Loved," the 2002 album sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and earned Maroon a pair of Grammy trophies.

Maroon 5's big opening knocked Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight down a notch to number two, with 198,000. Last week, the disc set the year's biggest sales mark by moving 632,000 copies.

While Maroon 5 didn't manage to beat Linkin Park's first-week totals, the band got a measure of revenge online.

It Won't Be Soon set a single-week sales record at iTunes with 101,000 copies sold through the digital retalier, besting Linkin Park's one-week-old record of 84,000.

Meanwhile, Maroon 5's hit single "Makes Me Wonder" made history with a 63-spot jump to top spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ozzy Osbourne's ninth solo album, Black Rain, entered the charts at number three with 152,000 copies. While that's a thousand copies short of his previous release, 2001's Down to Earth, Ozzy's number three showing is the Prince of Darkness' highest chart position as a solo artist.

Young Jeezy joined fellow rappers Slick Pulla and Blood Raw under the moniker U.S.D.A. to sell 95,000 copies of Cold Summer at number four.

Rounding out the top five was another newbie, the Used's Lies for the Liars. The Utah rockers scored career highs by opening at number five with 92,000 copies. The Used previously peaked at six with 2004's In Love and Death.

Getting boosts from the American Idol two-night finale were alums Chris Daughty, whose Daughtry checked in at number six, and Carrie Underwood, whose Some Hearts climbed back in the Top 10 at number eight. The album entered its 80th week on the Billboard 200 having already sold over 5.53 million.

The rest of the top 10 were all former chart-toppers: Michael Bublé's Call Me Irresponsible at seven, Avril Lavigne's The Best Damn Thing at nine and Ne-Yo's Because of You in the 10 spot.

With the film topping the Memorial Day box office, the soundtrack to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End sailed in at 14 with a 35,000-disc booty, the best showing yet by the franchise.

Survival of the Fittest, the first collaboration of rappers Lil Boosie and Webbie, sold 31,000 copies to open at number 17, while dance-rockers the Bravery sold 22,000 copies at 24 with their latest, The Sun & the Moon. The Beach Boys' new compilation, The Warmth of the Sun, surfed in at 40 with 14,000.

Other noteworthy bows included Alacranes Musical's Ahora Y Siempre at 47, Tim Armstrong's A Poet's Life at 59, Amber Pacific's Truth in Sincerity at 64 and the National's Boxer at 68.

Overall, album sales were down over 3 percent from the week previous and down 17 percent relative to the same week in 2006.
