Here on Leonardo's Isle...
Leonardo DiCaprio is on a buying spree: a Kurt Vonnegut novel here, a Caribbean island there.
The Vonnegut is Cat's Cradle; the island, Blackadore Caye, a 104-acre paradise east of Belize.
According to Daily Variety, DiCaprio optioned Cat's Cradle for his Appian Way production company. The father-son duo of James V. Hart (Contact) and newcomer Jake Hart has been tapped to write the script, the trade paper said.
Several Vonnegut titles previously have been brought to the big screen with varying degrees of success (Slaughterhouse Five) or not (Slapstick of Another Kind, based on Slapstick).
Published in 1963, Cat's Cradle is typical Vonnegut in that it's not at all typical. Its own back-cover paperback blurb describes it as an "apocalyptic tale of this planet's ultimate fate...[featuring] a midget as the protagonist [and] a complete, original theology created by a calypso singer."
Blackadore Caye, meanwhile, is a little more straightforward. According to the real-estate company that had its listing, the island is about "white sand beaches, rocky outcrops, coconut trees and other tropical vegetation."
Plus, there's room for an airplane landing strip.
DiCaprio's purchase was first noted in London's Sun on June 28. The Oscar-nominated actor, who once kicked back on The Beach, reportedly snapped up the all-around waterfront property for $1.75 million.
While Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando bought islands to establish private getaways, and Kim Basinger bought a town (Braselton, Georgia) for what proved to be an ill-fated investment, the Prius-praising DiCaprio reportedly wants to develop Blackadore Caye into an environmentally friendly resort.
"He wants to make money without destroying the environment," an unnamed DiCaprio friend was quoted as saying in The Sun.
If DiCaprio's reputed resort dream comes true, he might find himself competing for business with the Brando, a pricey planned getaway to be built on its namesake icon's old French Polynesian isle.
