Heigl Heads Behind the Camera

Sure, she's an Emmy nominee and newly minted movie star. But what Katherine Heigl really wants to do is produce.

Hot off of proving her box-office mettle with the summer hit Knocked Up, the TV doc has teamed with her mother-manager to form her own production company, with the first project being, natch, a starring vehicle for Heigl.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Grey's Anatomy star, along with momager Nancy Heigl, have formed an as yet untitled company to shepherd an as yet untitled action-comedy for Fox 2000. In keeping with the theme of the announcement, the plot of the flick is as yet unrevealed.

Whatever the story line turns out to be, it was dreamed up by coproducers Bob Kosberg and David Simon almost a year ago, and when the fever-pitch positive buzz began on Knocked Up earlier this year, they decided Heigl was the woman for the job. Per the Reporter, Kosberg and Simon pitched her the film during a Knocked Up press junket earlier this year.

The group took the project to Fox 2000, which is overseeing Heigl's in-the-works romantic comedy 27 Dresses. She stars in the flick as a perpetual bridesmaid who is forced to once again resurrect her altarside duties for her sister, set to marry a man she herself is secretly in love with. James Marsden, Judy Greer and Ed Burns also star; the pic is due out in January 2008.

As Heigl & Co. continue to troll for screenwriters for the new project, she's already back at work on the Grey's Anatomy set. Last month, she received an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her endeavors as Dr. Izzie Stevens.

Meanwhile, Knocked Up remains a strong draw more than two months after its release. The Judd Apatow-helmed comedy grossed an additional $1.2 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to more than $145 million.
