Heading South with Harold & Kumar

Kal Penn Jeff Vespa/WireImage.com

I'm on a plane to Shreveport, Louisiana, to visit the set of the Harold & Kumar sequel. Apparently there is more tale to be told in the quest for White Castle.

The project's interesting because the writer-director team helming the latest installment only wrote the original as a "spec" script, which is basically a writing sample to help get other jobs. They never thought they would actually sell the draft—that's almost unprecedented in this town. Now, they are directing the sequel. Only in Hollywood...

Last night was really special. I spoke at a writing class at the Santa Monica School of Entertainment and Technology. It was great to talk with people of all ages about film, and Hollywood, and all the madness and beauty in the business. The students were so passionate and knowledgeable about their craft, yet were green to the inner workings of the industry. It was both refreshing and inspiring.

M. Night Shyamalan Simon James/WireImage.com

On the plane I'm going to watch Unbreakable, the M. Night Shyamalan follow-up to The Sixth Sense. Whether or not you like the guy or his movies, you have to respect what he has accomplished. Working within the studio system can be extremely difficult, and he has made the movies that he has wanted to make, without compromising his vision. Very admirable.

There's a great book you should read called The Man Who Heard Voices, all about the making of The Lady in the Water, and again, regardless of you felt about the movie, the book is a must read. Check it out. I would love to see M. Night direct something that doesn't originate from him, like a Batman franchise flick, or even a war movie or a Western.

What do you guys think? Let me know if you're a fan of this guy. I mean, let's face it, his movies are original and different and have grossed billions of dollars around the world.

Okay, wheels up—I'm gonna bury myself in Kal Penn research. He seems like a cool dude. About to find out. Holla at you from the Deep South!
