HBO Books Another Flight, Stocks Up Entourage

Flight of the Conchords is flying high on HBO.

The cable net announced Friday it has renewed the quirky musical comedy series for a second season, slated to debut in 2008. The network also re-upped the show's Sunday night tag-team partner, Entourage, for a fifth season.

"Entourage is a full-fledged cultural phenomenon, and Flight of the Conchords has quickly become a show to watch," said Carolyn Strauss, president of HBO Entertainment. "I'm delighted that we'll be bringing new seasons of these distinctive series to our subscribers."

Flight of the Conchords stars New Zealand comedy duo Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who play fictionalized versions of themselves as struggling musicians, trying to find fame and fortune in New York City.

It debuted June 17 to positive reviews from critics, and quickly attracted a cult following with its endearing and original brand of humor.

The freshman series has undoubtedly received a boost from its post-Entourage time slot, as the earlier show's devoted audience seems to have been sticking around for more.

The decision to extend Entourage was a no-brainer. The hit Hollywood series, currently in its fourth season, earned seven Emmy nominations this year, including Best Comedy Series and Best Supporting Actor for both Jeremy Piven and Kevin Dillon.

Given that viewers can't seem to get enough of Vince, Turtle and the gang, it should come as welcome news that series creator Doug Ellin likes the sounds of making a movie based on the show.

"If people were interested in that, and somebody wanted to finance it, I would be all for it. But it's never been discussed," he told TelevisionWeek. "I hope we have four or five good seasons left of this show before that were to be the case."

Meanwhile, HBO was not as kind to its other freshman series of the summer, the surfer drama John from Cincinnati, which was canceled earlier this week following its season finale.

Other HBO shows coming back for more include Big Love, which was renewed for a third season, and Curb Your Enthusiasm, which returns for a sixth and presumably final season next month.
