HazMat Scare Dims "Guiding Light"

Guiding Light has temporarily gone dark.

Members of the CBS soap's cast and crew were quarantined Thursday morning after a mercury-filled blood pressure device cracked on set.

The life-imitating-art incident took place while the New York-based studio was being dressed for a scene set in an emergency room.

"Our staged emergency turned into a real life emergency," executive producer Ellen Wheeler said in a statement.

Production on the long-running daytime staple was halted shortly after 8:30 a.m., while firefighters and a HazMat team rounded up the highly toxic chemical and tested mercury levels throughout the Midtown studio's sixth floor.

Show stars Scott Bailey, Rob Bogue, John Dricoll, Stephanie Gatschet, Tom Pelphrey and Michelle Ray, along with members of the production crew, were all ordered into quarantine while the city's health department examined them.

Everyone present was given a clean bill of health.

Mercury is poisonous and can cause long-term problems with the central nervous system, brain, kidney and lungs, per WebMD.com.

Production on the episode--the show's 14,764th--has already resumed, with one small hitch. The hospital set will remain off-limits until it passes a second mercury-level test in 24 hours.

Despite Thursday's production hiccup, the 53-year-old soap shows no signs of slowing down. The series was nominated for eight Daytime Emmys this year, and CBS has renewed the show through the 2007 season.
