Hasselbeck Hassled by Stalker
Looks like Britney's not the only celeb mom dealing with child services.
The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck says she has been the target of an unidentified female stalker who has been phoning in false accusations to New York authorities claiming Hasselbeck is a poor parent.
"In recent weeks, Elisabeth and her husband, Tim, have been stalked and harassed by an individual or individuals who seem to want to do them harm," View ringleader Barbara Walters said on Wednesday morning's show. "Now, someone has contacted the papers."
According to a report in Wednesday's New York Daily News, an unknown woman "with a Southern twang" and claiming to be "a friend of the family" has phoned various agencies to make false and "creepy" allegations involving the Hasselbecks and their one-year-old daughter, Grace Elisabeth.
While the exact nature of the accusations is unknown, Hasselbeck calls them "disturbing."
"This is a malicious attempt to harass our family," Walters said, reading a statement on behalf of the Hasselbecks. "These allegations have been fully reviewed by child protective authorities and medical professionals and found to be absolutely false. This matter has been turned over to the district attorney's office for prosecution of the individual(s) responsible for the false accusation."
Hasselbeck's View cohorts, meanwhile, vouched for the 28-year-old's supermom skills.
"[It] might be somebody who doesn't like her politics or maybe somebody who's crazy or maybe somebody who wants the baby," Walters told the Daily News. "We just don't know."
After reading the family's statement on The View, Walters turned to Hasselbeck and said, "You have our love and our respect, we couldn't care about you or Tim more than we do. You have our admiration, our affection and our total support."
Hasselbeck, who remained quietly beside Walters as she read the statement, responded by saying she and her husband were "happy now that these accusations are on their way to becoming completely resolved."
In other View news, the ladies are preparing to count down Meredith Vieira's final days. Vieira will step down at the end of May to take over for Katie Couric on NBC's Today show.
Producers on The View have already kicked off their search to find Vieira's successor, with Patricia Heaton, Mimi Rogers and CNN's Soledad O'Brien among the names being bandied about online.
"Chemistry is important and I think humor is important," Walters told the Associated Press. "We're looking for somebody who can do the interviews and also the hot topics at the beginning of the show."
As for any frontrunners to fill the seat, Walters isn't talking.
"I've seen rumor after rumor after rumor," she said. "I think every agent in America is calling."
