Harvey, "Titans" Fit Image Awards
The mustachioed quarter of Spike Lee's hit docu-comedy led the nominees Thursday for the 32nd edition of the NAACP Image Awards, scoring seven nods, including Outstanding Comedy Series for his WB sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show.
All told, it's shaping up to be a ceremony fit for a king--or kings. The Original Kings of Comedy was nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture, while three of its stars--Harvey, Cedric "The Entertainer" and D.L. Hughley--picked up nods for their TV work. Hughley's UPN sitcom, The Hughleys, scored four nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
In the film categories, the little-watched romantic gem Love & Basketball, starring Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan, and Disney's football hit Remember the Titans, starring Denzel Washington, each scored five nominations, including Outstanding Motion Picture and acting nods for their stars. (Is Oscar eyeing Denzel for another shot?) Those films will face off against The Original Kings of Comedy, Shaft and Men of Honor for best pic at the civil-rights organization's annual awards fest.
Among the TV networks, the NAACP--though critical of the current dearth of minority roles on TV--did find enough diversity on the tube to nominate shows like ABC's rookie Gideon's Crossing, Showtime's Soul Food and CBS' recently canceled hospital drama City of Angels for Outstanding Drama Series. City of Angels and Soul Food received five TV nominations apiece.
Meanwhile, Philly-based up-and-comer Jill Scott and gospel diva Yolanda Adams led the music nominees, each nabbing four nods. Scott, who has garnered critical acclaim for her debut Who Is Jill Scott?...Words & Sounds Vol. 1, is up for Outstanding New Artist, Female Artist and Outstanding Album. Adams earned nominations for Outstanding Female Artist and Outstanding Song for "Open My Heart."
The awards, featuring a whopping 41 categories, were established to honor positive portrayals of people of color in motion pictures, TV, music and literature. A panel of 300 industry types and NAACP leaders picked the nominees from more than 1,100 entries.
The ceremony will be taped March 3 and to air on Fox March 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
