"It's interesting actually," says Radcliffe in the above clip given exclusively to MTV. "If you start to think for a moment, not about these characters, but if you think of the lives these characters actually have in the books, and the fact that, to a certain level, because they exist in the collective consciousness of a generation, they do exist."
"I always think that that's one of the wonderful things about Potter and the Potter fan base," he adds. "If you think about the other big costume-wearing [franchises] that go with it, things like Star Wars and Star Trek, with Potter, because it started off as a literary thing, has created a generation of the same kind of mentality...with an appetite for reading and literature, which is kind of amazing."
But while Radcliffe is essentially expressing that Potter (and its fans) simply benefits from having originated on the printed page, William Shatner, on the other hand, has no problem telling folks why his beloved Star Trek is definitely light years ahead of Star Wars.
"Star Trek had relationships and conflict among the relationships and stories that involved humanity and philosophical questions," he says in a recent YouTube posting. "Star Wars was special effects. It was ILM at its best...Star Wars is derivative of Star Trek. Derivative!"
What's more, Shatner also points out that a character such as Princess Leia, while "beautiful," just "can't compare to the wonderful heroines" on Star Trek.
Of course, when asked if Captain Kirk would have ever considered running off with Leia, Shatner replies: "Absolutely!"
Now that would have been a movie!
