We'll get to Vanessa Hudgens talking about her recently chopped-off locks and edgy new movie role in just a minute.

But first, the former High School Musical cutie pie is opening up about her love life—or lack thereof...

"I think it's really important to love yourself and truly just be happy with yourself and just kind of let the rest of it fall into place," Hudgens told us of being single while promoting the U.S. Open of Surfing's 2011 Hurley Walk the Walk National Championship.

"It is fun to go look at cute boys. But at the same time, I like being single. I feel like I have all this time for myself to be able to do these roles."

Roles like her one in the upcoming drama Gimme Shelter for which Hudgens recently transformed her look from girlie to edgy to step into the character of a pregnant teen living on the streets.

"It's unrecognizable," Hudgens says of herself in the film. "Even when I'm like kind of done-up, I look in the mirror and I'm like, 'I don't know who that is.'

"It was shocking, but at the same time so exciting," adds the 22-year-old (who says she misses her long hair "a lot!"). "Now it gives me the opportunity to be able to step out of what people see me as and allows to them to get out of their heads and be able to just experience the film."

So how edgy will we be seeing the actress? "On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm going to say, like, an 8, only because there was no smoking or drinking or drugs that my character did. And there's no sex...that you see."
