Halle Surrenders

Alleged bad motorist Halle Berry, charged with leaving the scene of an accident that injured another driver, made a field trip to the police station this weekend to turn herself in.

No word on whether she drove, walked, took a bus or hitched, but around 11 a.m. Saturday, Berry showed up at the West Hollywood branch of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deparment, where she was booked on the misdemeanor count.

A department spokesperson says the actress was released on her own recognizance and ordered to show up at the Beverly Hills Court May 4 for arraignment.

She faces a maximum penalty of one year in county jail and a $10,000 fine, although prosecutors say the likely sentence will be much lighter.

As everyone knows by now, Berry, 31, was cruising through Hollywood in her rented Chevy Blazer in the wee hours of February 23 when she allegedly ran a red light, slammed into another car and left the scene. Reps for the Golden Globe-winning actress said the reason she sped away was because she needed to get to the hospital: She suffered a gash on her forehead that required 22 stitches.

Meanwhile, the crashee, Hetal Raythatha, has sued Berry for the crash. Raythatha suffered a broken wrist and contends she also has back and neck injuries. Her lawyer claims an emergency crew had to use the jaws of life to get the woman out of her crushed Pontiac Sunbird.

On Friday, the Los Angeles District Attorney decided not to press more serious felony hit-and-run charges against Berry, in part because the office deemed Raythatha's injuries, in the words of one representative, "not exactly life-threatening."
