Halle Restrains Would-Be Wooer

A quick glance at Halle Berry's jam-packed datebook for the past few days might look something like this:

Saturday: Show up to collect Worst Actress trophy at the Razzie Awards for Catwoman.

Sunday: Glam up to present at Academy Awards.

Monday: Take care of that stalker problem.

Yes, after spending the weekend on the award-show circuit, the Oscar winner dispatched her legal rep to the Santa Monica courthouse Monday to obtain a restraining order against a man they say has been hounding the actress.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Linda K. Lefkowitz complied, ordering Robert A. Sawyer to stay at least 100 yards away from Berry, her residence, her office and vehicle for the next three years.

Per court documents filed by Berry's lawyer on Feb. 10, Sawyer sent the actress a series of disturbing letters describing "delusions he has about a purported romantic relationship [with her]."

Berry's "security detail" in turn contacted Sawyer, a native of San Pablo, California, and employee of San Francisco-based United Security, in November and told him "not to try to have any further communications" with the actress.

But Sawyer allegedly ignored the warnings and continued his campaign to woo the Catwoman star. In a letter dated Feb. 1, he writes that he's planning a Valentine's Day visit.

"I want to spend the day with you. I'll either drive or catch the bus down there. I prefer to rent a car," the letter reads.

Sawyer also included his cell phone number so Berry could call him. "If you don't get me, leave a message where I can reach you. I'm not playing now. I understand you want me to move with you. That's what I want to."

The letter concluded: "Call me. I'm serious, so stop horsing around. I'm tired as hell of not hearing from you. I was told that you'd talk to me when I finished. Its [sic] finished, so call me damn it. Always Yours, Robert A. Sawyer."

While Berry was recovering from Oscar-night festivities, her attorney, Blair Berk, appeared in court on the actress' behalf. According to Los Angeles' City New Service, Berk told the judge that she had "a little bit of concern regarding security this morning" after seeing Sawyer roaming inside the courthouse. Lefkowitz send the bailiff into the hallway to look for Sawyer, but he couldn't be found.

Berk did not return a phone call seeking comment late Monday. Berry's publicist, Karen Samfillipo, was also unavailable.

This is the second time in a year that Berry has had to go to court to keep an unwanted fan at bay.

Last May, she obtained a restraining order against Louisiana native Greg Broussard after the 35-year-old former Navy diver claimed to be her fiancé, made threatening phone calls and sent her gifts, including an engagement ring.

Berry next appears in the Oprah Winfrey-produced TV movie Their Eyes Were Watching God, based on the classic novel by African-American writer Zora Neale Hurston, airing on ABC next Sunday.
