Halle Files for Divorce

Halle Berry is making it official.

The Oscar-winning actor filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday, after separating from her husband, Eric Benét, back in October, her spokesperson confirmed.

At the time, Berry stated that she and Benét needed time apart "to reevaluate our union."

Apparently, further evaluation led to a decision to dissolve.

While Berry's publicist declined to comment, her lawyer, Neal Hersh, told Celebrity Justice that the split was proceeding smoothly.

"So far the divorce is amicable, and I expect it to stay that way," Hersh said.

The Monster's Ball star wed Benét, an R&B musician, in a low-profile ceremony in January 2001. It was his first walk down the aisle, her second. However, Benét has a daughter, India, from a previous relationship.

Just three months after their wedding, the duo filed a $5 million lawsuit against Star magazine for suggesting that the union was already "on the rocks."

A year later, tabloid trouble struck again, when reports indicated that Benét had strayed from his bride. While Berry never confirmed the reports, she never denied them.

In a November 2002 interview with Essence magazine, she confirmed that her private life had suffered a "staggering crisis" around the time of her historic Academy Awards victory. She said that she and Benét were in couples therapy.

It's not Berry's first relationship to crash and burn.

Her first marriage to baseball star, David Justice, ended in 1996, but not amicably. During divorce proceedings, Berry put in a request for a restraining order against Justice, claiming her ex was harassing her.

Earlier this year, former Berry beau Christopher Williams publicly denounced fellow Berry ex, Wesley Snipes, as the man who hit the actor so hard that she lost most of the hearing in her right ear.

Williams said he was sick of being accused of being a Berry beater; the actor, for her part, has never divulged the identity of her attacker.

While she may be unlucky in love, Berry has been more than fortunate in her moviemaking career.

She recently wrapped Catwoman, opposite Benjamin Bratt. The two have teamed up again for director Sidney Lumet's The Set-Up, currently in production.

That's not all on Berry's plate--she's also signed onto Lee Tamahori's action-thriller, The Guide, and will voice a character in CGI's animated film, Robot.

Still ahead is a starring role in director Patricia Cardosa's Nappily Ever After, as well as a made-for-television version of Zora Neale Hurston's classic novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God.

Benét's first album, True to Myself, was released in 1996, followed by A Day in the Life in 1999. He has had such hits as "Spend My Life with You" and "Love Don't Love Me." He also appeared as the love interest in the Mariah Carey megabomb Glitter.
