Hairy Situation for "Felicity"
Now, execs at the WB network are blaming Felicity star Keri Russell's shocking, super-short mop for poor viewership.
According to the WB's entertainment president, the new 'do--coupled with this season's "rocky start creatively"--was so "overwhelmingly negative" it hurt the show.
"Nobody is cutting their hair again on this network," said Susanne Daniels at a semiannual gathering of TV reporters in Pasadena, California, Monday. She added that the show's mop-haired star is growing her curly locks back.
Russell's camp has not yet responded for comment.
The character that won Russell a Golden Globe Award last year, college sophomore Felicity Porter, snipped her thick curls earlier in the season after a rough breakup with Ben (Scott Speedman).
In addition to the Felicity hairdo update, Daniels and Jamie Kellner, the network's CEO, revealed plans for comedy and drama projects for upcoming seasons.
They plan to pull away from their teenybop, angst-ridden image (see: Dawson's Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) with projects from Drew Carey Show executive producer Bruce Helford and ER executive producer John Wells.
Meanwhile, Felicity producers are hoping pull the coveted 18- to 34-year-old viewers--who have not been tuning in--back for an upcoming Twilight Zone-esque episode scheduled for January 23.
In the black-and-white episode, titled "Help for the Lovelorn," Felicity seeks "help for her lovesick heart in an unconventional way and ends up trapped with her friends in a strange black and white world."
