The Hack(man) Strikes Back
The twice-Oscar'd thespian, world-famous for his acting chops, broke out the karate chops Monday afternoon after a West Hollywood fender bender.
According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department, Hackman was cruising in the vicinity of Sunset and Crescent Heights boulevards when he rear-ended a Volvo station wagon that allegedly cut in front of the actor.
Witnesses say the two cars pulled to the curb, presumably so the drivers could politely share insurance information.
But proper accident protocol apparently wasn't on the mind of the road-enraged Volvo driver.
Witnesses say the man got out of his car and into Hackman's face. The driver "kept stepping up on [Hackman]," one bystander tells Los Angeles' City News Service. "There was no visible damage to either car...It looked like [Volvoman] just wanted to provoke Hackman.
"There was more of that for several minutes, but [Hackman] seemed to keep his cool. He didn't do anything. But then something was said."
According to Hackman's publicist, Dick Guttman, Volvoman then shoved the actor in the chest.
And that's when Hackman hauled off and belted Volvoman. Hackman got in a half-dozen blows before a passenger in the Volvo wrestled the actor to the ground.
That pretty much ended the fisticuffs. A tow-truck driver showed up and passed out some Band-Aids to Hackman--who, like the other driver, had assorted scrapes to go along with a bruised face. By then, police had also arrived and were keeping the drivers separated.
Police say neither man wanted to press charges. No police report was filed, no charges were made and both men were allowed to leave the scene after exchanging insurance information. Police say since no arrests were made, they weren't going to release the name of Volvoman.
Of the Hack attack Guttman says, "Gene thought it was funny, really. He's not a soft guy, he's an ex-Marine, and he can take care of himself. Really, he's a very gentle guy, but anybody can be provoked."
When he's not meting out street justice, Hackman is making movies. His latest, the David Mamet-directed caper Heist, hits theaters November 9.
