Gym Hymn: Going Gaga for Gosling

Let us pause for a moment to admire Ryan Gosling's body of work. Who are we kidding? We're talking about the hunky actor's work...on his body.

A source close to Gosling says he's been putting in overtime at the gym, sculpting some mighty muscles.

"He's looking really trim," said the source. "It's funny, because the last time I saw him, he kind of looked like a load."

Well, to be fair, he did put on 20 pounds last year for the film The Lovely Bones. But he dropped the role before shooting began (creative differences) and then dropped the flab too, apparently replacing it with muscle.

Our insider caught Gosling's latest performance, er, workout, Monday night at L.A. Fitness in Universal City. Ryan's hour-plus session started on his upper body with the dip stand, moved to the mat to work the abs and finished off on the extension bench, building up his lower back and oblique muscles.

Why all the hard labor? Could it be just to stay in shape while wrapping his new murder-mystery film, All Good Things, costaring Kirsten Dunst? Or could he have another reason—say, winning back an old flame?

As we reported earlier, Ryan's ex Rachel McAdams showed up at the L.A. club Green Door to support him while he guest deejayed on July 29. And this week, a source tells us that when a good friend asked Ryan about McAdams, the actor smiled cryptically and said, "She's a dear soul."

Oh, get a room already!

But make sure the hotel's got a good gym.
