Green Day, 50 Cent Bag Billboards
Green Day had quite a night at the 2005 Billboard Music Awards, taking home six trophies in all--a feat matched only by 50 Cent, whose awards included Artist of the Year trophy and Album of the Year for Massacre.
Green Day kicked off Tuesday night's festivities with a performance of "Holiday." The punk rockers went on to win Rock Artist, Pop Group, Billboard 200 Album Group, Hot 100 Group and Modern Rock Artist of the Year awards, as well as Rock Song of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."
Meanwhile, 50 Cent, who was up in eight categories going into the ceremony, picked up Hot 100 Artist, R&B/Hip-Hop Artist and Rap Artist of the Year awards, as well as the ring tone of the Year for "Candy Shop." The rapper was unable to attend the festivities and accepted the awards via cell phone from Paris.
The Billboard Awards were held at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena and hosted by LL Cool J, while Nicole Richie's fiancé, DJ AM, presided over the decks.
Mariah Carey, who went into the evening up for seven awards, was a five-time winner, including Female R&B/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year and Hot 100 Song for "We Belong Together."
American Idol winner Carrie Underwood proved her fan base extended beyond the show by tripling up on awards, including Country Single Sales Artist of the Year and Top Selling Hot 100 Song of the Year for "Inside Your Heaven/Independence Day." Gut-shaker extraordinaire Shakira also picked up a troika of trophies, including Latin Pop Album Artist of the Year.
The night included performances by Ashlee Simpson, who teamed with Pretty Ricky on a version of her song "L.O.V.E," Ciara, R. Kelly and Gwen Stefani, who also picked up the award for New Artist of the Year.
Predictably enough, Kanye West managed to add some attitude to the night when he took the stage to accept the Artist Achievement Award.
"After all the accolades, the Time covers, the awards, the music connecting with the people...after all that...my greatest achievement still is, I still think I'm the greatest," the "Jesus Walks" singer said.
One of the evening's highlights came when Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong took the stage to present the Century Award to Tom Petty.
"I love music, I love rock and roll, therefore I love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers," Armstrong said. "But if there is one thing I've learned from Tom Petty is that great songs never go out of style and live forever."
After a video presentation paying tribute to Petty's music, Armstrong continued, "So if you're going to come up and thank God, thank God for Tom Petty."
The veteran rocker took the stage and admitted he was suffering from a case of nerves, but went on to thank his band, fans and family.
"I'll endeavor to deserve [this award] and may I remind you that this ain't the end," Petty said at the close of his acceptance speech. "I can still kick some ass. God bless you."
R. Kelly, along with a cast of white-clad dancers and gospel singers, closed the evening with a performance of "Let Your Light Shine," the song he wrote in tribute to victims of the Gulf Coast hurricanes.
The Billboard Awards are determined by sales figures and radio play data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, with the winners determined by the 2005 year-end charts.
