Grand Jury Takes Up Hank Jr.'s Case

Are you ready for an indictment?

The pending misdemeanor assault case against Hank Williams Jr. was turned over to a Tennessee grand jury Monday after a judge determined that probable cause had been established to file charges against the country-rock star.

The cocktail waitress who accused the Monday Night Football theme singer of choking her testified during a preliminary hearing today that her encounter with Williams left her with red marks and bruises on her neck.

Holly Hornbeak has said that Williams, 57, harassed her while she waited tables in March at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis and then put her into a chokehold in an attempt to kiss her. She testified Monday that a member of his entourage--which supposedly epitomized Williams' "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" as the evening went on--asked her to keep quiet about what happened with Williams and then offered her concert tickets.

Williams' attorney then questioned Hornbeak about her lawyer's request for $250,000 from Williams' camp in exchange for dropping the complaint against him.

"It was a serious attack and this is not something you take lightly," Hornbeak, who was 19 when the alleged incident took place Mar. 18, told the Shelby County court. "I say when someone does something wrong, they're entitled to be punished."

Williams was in Memphis at the time to visit his daughters, musicians Hilary and Holly, who were recovering from injuries they suffered in a car crash a few days earlier. A warrant was issued for Williams' arrest two weeks later and the Paris, Tennessee, resident cut a hunting trip short and turned himself in.

The son of country music pioneer Hank Williams has emphasized that all he was thinking about at the time was his children's wellbeing.

And that appears to be exactly what is concerning him for the most part now, as well.

"My daughter who was nearly killed right out here, she took a step a few days ago and walked upstairs and drove a car," Williams told reporters Monday outside the courthouse. "You're darn right I feel good about everything."

"She didn't go to a doctor, she didn't take pictures of these alleged red marks and bruises? C'mon now," Williams' attorney, Leslie Ballin, said. "Talking about victims? I'm representing one here. This is an attempt at a financial hijacking. There was no assault."

According to Memphis' Commercial Appeal newspaper, which first reported the story, the assault charges Williams might be faced with if the grand jury says yea carry a maximum sentence of 11 months and 29 days in jail and a $2,500 fine.
