Grand Jury Drops Hammer on Tony Jr.
Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau announced Friday that the city's grand jury has indicted actor Robert Iler and two pals on felony second-degree robbery charges for allegedly filching $40 from a pair of siteseers. If convicted, the trio could each face up to 15 years in the slammer.
Iler is tentatively due back in court October 25.
The 16-year-old actor, best known for his role as the pot-puffing, authority-dissing, wannabe mobster Anthony "A.J." Soprano Jr. on HBO's The Sopranos, was busted July 4 for his alleged role in a robbery on the Upper East Side. Iler and his buddies are accused of stealing the cash from two other boys, both tourists from Brazil. Police say Iler also had a marijuana-filled baggie and a bong on him when he was arrested.
Iler and two of his friends, Michael Cournede, 19, and Alban Selimaj, 16, have already pleaded innocent to the robbery charges. The other alleged cohort is 15, and his case is being handled in Family Court because of his age. All four are free on bail.
Iler also pleaded not guilty to the drug-possession charge. That count carries a maximum $100 fine.
Iler's camp says the whole mess was a mix-up and the young actor will eventually be found innocent. "This is an expected part of the legal process," Iler's publicist Dan Klores said Friday. "We are convinced that Robert will be completely exonerated once the facts of this case come out."
Iler earlier issued a brief statement saying, "I feel terribly embarrassed. I never, ever would or did rob anyone in my life. I know that the events of the past two days have been extremely difficult for my family and friends, and for that I'm sorry."
In addition to his real-life parents, Iler is also being backed by his TV folks. Shortly after the arrest, James Gandolfini said, "Robert is a terrific kid. I've never known him to be anything other than hardworking and truthful. If he says he wasn't involved, then he wasn't involved." Added Edie Falco, "Robert is a sweet kid and a pleasure to work with. I find it impossible to believe he'd ever be involved in something like this."
He also has received a vote of support from The Sopranos' godfather, David Chase. "Robert is a really great kid. I'd be proud to have him as my son. As it is, he's a friend and a colleague," says the creator of Emmy-nominated hit. "If he says he didn't rob anybody, then he didn't. It's as simple as that for me."
Chase also has said he doesn't think the arrest will affect the shooting of the fourth season, which is scheduled to begin in October, but won't air until June at the earliest.
