"Gilmore" Guy Not California Dreamin'

Better pour another cup of coffee, Luke.

Looks like Jess Mariano won't be leaving Stars Hollow any time soon.

Milo Ventimiglia's Gilmore Girls spinoff has officially been axed by the WB.

Originally intended for a fall 2003 debut, the show's premise--Jess moves to Venice, California, to bond with his estranged dad (Rob Estes)--allegedly rubbed test audiences the wrong way, according to E! Online TV maven Kristin. The series was left off the WB's fall schedule, instead slotted for midseason and shortened to a six-episode order.

Now comes the announcement from the Frog that the surf-side spinoff has been scrapped, allegedly due to the show's costly location.

"After thorough analysis, we have determined that the costs to produce an ambitious series, filmed totally on location in Venice, California, were simply prohibitive," WB entertainment prez Jordan Levin and WB TV prez Peter Roth told the trades.

"Everyone in the project agreed that the necessary cost cuts would severely compromise the creative vision and quality of the show," the TV execs added.

Despite the leafy scenery and occasional deer, the Connecticut-based Gilmore Girls is shot entirely on the Warner Bros. lot.

Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino was circumspect. "I should have listened to what my mother told me when I was a little girl: 'If you set a show in Venice, no one's gonna pay for it,'" Sherman-Palladino told the trade. "This was a great project, with a great cast. Dan [her husband and coexecutive producer] and I now look forward to a fourth great year of Gilmore Girls and to definitely developing new projects for fall 2004."

Jess' departure was established at the end of the third season when he left Connecticut for the West Coast. With his character's California dreams dashed, Ventimiglia could return to the show that made him a certifiable teen idol (he's landed the obligatory up-and-comer gig in a Kevin Williamson horror flick, currently shooting the vampire movie Cursed).

But Jess and Rory fans should keep their enthusiasm in check. When asked by E! Online if there was any hope of a rekindled romance, Ventimiglia replied, "No, he has moved on."

That could be for the best, since dating Alexis Bledel onscreen seems to carry its own curse. In addition to Ventimiglia's stalled spinoff, Jared Padalecki's planned MacGyver update didn't make the cut. There is one exception, though: Ex-Gilmore Guy Chad Michael Murray received a midseason slot for his upcoming drama One Tree Hill--right around the time that other Gilmore graduate project was set to bow.
