"Gilmore Girls" Xmas Bonus

The Gilmore Girls have gotten a big fat Christmas bonus: another season.

The WB announced the good tidings Thursday, saying the quirky family drama had been picked up for a fifth season, taking it through 2004-05.

Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel star as mother-daughter combo Lorelai and Rory, who crack wise, consume unhealthy amounts of caffeine and get along like best friends (in other words, nothing like your real-life family).

A signature series for the Frog, the show launched in 2000 to critical acclaim and some financial encouragement from the Family Friendly Programming Forum. Viewers were a little slower to catch on but since its move from Thursdays to Tuesday nights the show's been tops with female teens.

WB prez Jordan Levin credited creator Amy Sherman-Palladino for developing the show's irreverent tone, saying she "is a gifted writer with one of the most unique voices on television, not to mention a truly frightening collection of silly hats."

The fifth season extension will likely make it possible to pass the 100-episode mark into syndication.

However, it won't do much for Gilmore's scuttled spin-off, first scheduled to launch this fall, then delayed until midseason before being canceled altogether. Depending on whom you believe, E! Online's TV maven Kristin Veitch or the network, disappointed test audiences or a prohibitive budget were behind the decision to nix teen heartthrob Milo Ventimiglia's move to his own show.

Faring much better are the show's main stars, Graham and Bledel, who have used their boob-tube clout to branch out into feature films. Graham most recently starred opposite Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa and just wrapped shooting on Seeing Other People. Bledel, a former model who made her theatrical debut in last year's Tuck Everlasting, will appear in two upcoming films, DysEnchanted and The Orphan King, both due out some time next year.
