Gervais Rides Fame Rollercoaster

Ricky Gervais is learning that fame has its perks and pitfalls.

The erstwhile star and co-creator of cult U.K. hit The Office is becoming the subject of increased attention now that his faux documentary series has crossed the Atlantic in earnest.

The U.S. version of The Office premiered last week on NBC to stronger than expected ratings, with a time slot-winning 5.0 rating and 11.23 million viewers overall.

But not all the attention focused on the 42-year-old of late has been of the wanted variety.

Last week, two English men were sentenced for trying to impersonate the comic and steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from Gervais' burgeoning bank account.

In an outlandish plot, Kenneth Speight and Craig Reeves allegedly obtained Gervais' personal details from an employee at the London bank where the Office star does business, then forged a passport in his name (using a pic of Gervais cut from the back of an Office DVD) to obtain his money.

Surprisingly, the crooks actually managed to swindle nearly $374,000 out of Gervais' account.

However, they were ultimately caught after they tried to turn the cash into untraceable gold. A bullion dealer who happened to be an Office fan helped catch the thieves after he became suspicious when one of the men attempted to impersonate Gervais' voice over the telephone.

Speight and Reeves received two and a half years in the slammer for conspiracy to defraud in what was their first, and presumably last, acting job.

Meanwhile, the real Gervais has several irons in the fire this year--including the huge perk of having the opportunity to write an upcoming episode of The Simpsons, which will tape in a few months, per the New York Times.

Until then, the Golden Globe-winning comic is busy prepping his highly anticipated upcoming television series, Extras, in England, with such Hollywood A-listers as Ben Stiller and Samuel L. Jackson already on board as guest stars.

No word on whether or not Extras will air in the U.S. yet--but in the meantime, American viewers will have to settle for Gervais' American doppelganger on The Office, Steve Carell, Tuesday nights on NBC.
