George Michael's Legal Whammy
George Michael was woken up, only to "go go" directly to jail over the weekend.
The 42-year-old singer was arrested in central London Saturday night on suspicion of drug possession after police discovered him slumped over the steering wheel of a car, according to published reports.
Officials were called to the scene after a passing motorist noticed the singer's condition and became concerned. Paramedics examined Michael but determined he did not need medical attention.
A search of the former Wham! frontman's car yielded small amounts of cannabis and the club drug GHB, also known as liquid Ecstasy, according to London's The Sun.
Police confirmed they had arrested a 42-year-old man on suspicion of drug possession, but initially declined to confirm Michael's identity or comment on the specific substances found in the search.
"We were called by a member of the public to a man seen slumped over the steering wheel of a car on the street close to Hyde Park Corner," a Metropolitan Police spokesman said in a statement.
"A search of the man revealed what was believed to be controlled substances."
Michael released a statement Monday expressing his regret over the incident.
"It's my own stupid fault, as usual," the singer said. "I was in possession of class C drugs, which is an offense, and I have no complaints about the police, who were professional throughout."
Michael was reportedly detained for about seven hours before being bailed to return to a police station next month pending police investigation.
If convicted of possessing Class C drugs, a category that includes cannabis, tranquilizers and some painkillers, the "I Want Your Sex" singer could face up to two years in prison and an unlimited fine under British law. However, it's more likely that he will escape with a warning.
It's not Michael's first run-in with the law. In 1998, he was arrested in a Los Angeles park after engaging in "lewd behavior" in front of a plainclothes policeman in a public restroom. Following the incident, Michael revealed that he was gay.
Michael, who has copped in past interviews to using both pot and Ecstasy as a means of combatting depression, has no plans to turn the new incident into fodder for his art. Though he memorialized the infamous restroom incident in "Outside," he said his weekend drug arrest would not wind up as a song.
"P.S. I promise I won't make a record out of this one--even though it's tempting," he said in his statement.
In November, the singer said he planned to wed his longtime partner, Kenny Goss, early this year under Britain's Civil Partnership Act, which went into effect last December.
"I'm not very romantic about it to be honest," Michael said at the time. "We want to do it, just in case. You never know, I could get hit by a bus and the poor man could have nothing."
Michael, who has sold more than 80 million records over the course of his 25-year career, announced in 2004 that he was finished working for the corporate music world and planned to distribute all future tunes over the Internet, with the proceeds going to charity.
