George Michael's Faith in Marijuana

George Michael's favorite band of all time is Led Zeppelin, and his current drug of choice is marijuana. But while he couldn't get Robert Plant, Jimmy Page & Co. to accompany him to a recent interview, he was able to bring along his pal Mary Jane.

The former Wham! frontman toked away during a taped chat shot in Madrid and set to air Oct. 31 on Britain's South Bank Show Special, proving to viewers that he meant it when he said the "stuff keeps me sane and happy. I could write without it…if I were sane and happy."

While who knows how many people are going to cheer when they hear Michael say that, the pop singer's actions prompted a U.K. mental health organization to brand the 43-year-old "stupid and naive" for lighting up on TV.

"As a huge international star any public comments will draw enormous attention," said Paul Corry, spokesman for mental health charity Rethink. "Cannabis is not a risk-free drug. For a significant minority of people, it is a trigger for developing a severe long-term mental illness like schizophrenia."

To be fair, Michael, who was getting ready to go on stage at the time, then said: "It's a great drug—but obviously it's not very healthy. You can't afford to smoke it if you've got anything else to do."

Apparently the need to drive somewhere doesn't qualify as having something to do, because London police found him twice this past year—once in February and then again Oct. 1—slumped in the driver's seat of his BMW, both times in possession of cannabis. Michael has denied, however, that his behavior either time was drug related.

In turn, the following message will be posted onscreen during the upcoming special on Britain's ITV network: "George Michael wishes to inform viewers that he has never tested positive for drink or drugs whilst driving."

An ITV spokeswoman pointed out to reporters that marijuana use is legal in Madrid, where the part of the interview in which he's smoking was filmed. The rest was shot at his home in England.

Michael, who kicked off a greatest hits tour last month in Barcelona, seemed to want his words to speak louder than his actions, going on to say that "it can be a terrible, terrible drug. You've got to be in the right position to take it. You've got to have achieved most of your ambitions, because it chills you out to such a degree that you could lose your ambitions."

Despite his legal troubles and what technically is a substance abuse problem if he uses marijuana to make it through the day, the "Father Figure" singer insisted that he's feeling good.

"I live in the house of my dreams with the man of my dreams," Michael told ITV. "I'm happy with the music I'm making, and I'm still loaded."

With money, we'll assume.

"If I'd drunk as much as I'd smoked," Michael said, "my God, I'd look like Keith Richards."
