Gellar Holds "Grudge"
Buffy is back for another supernatural adventure.
Sort of.
Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has staked out the lead role in The Grudge, an English-language remake of the Japanese horror flick Ju-On.
The movie's title refers to a violent curse issued by a person who died an unnaturally angry death. The curse lives by moving on to a new victim each time somebody dies.
The original chip-on-the-shoulder flick, Ju-On, was itself based on a TV movie of the same name and spawned three sequels. The ill-will thriller was rated one of the scariest movies in Japan--on a par with another seat-clutching export, Ringu, which was translated into last summer's hit The Ring.
The Grudge is being helmed by the original writer-director Takashi Shimizu and will be produced under Sam Raimi's shingle, Ghost House Pictures, with the help of one of the original film's producers, Taka Ichise, who also worked on The Ring.
Shooting on the Columbia Pictures project is scheduled to take place in Tokyo with an expected January start date.
Gellar's kept largely out of sight since shooting finished on the seventh and final season of Buffy last May. She recently wrapped Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which features a reunited Mystery Inc. gang, including Gellar's hubby Freddie Prinze Jr., Linda Cardellini and Matthew Lillard, solving the case of a dastardly masked villain with plans to take control of the city of Coolsville.
The Warner Bros. sequel to the successful Scooby-Doo franchise is expected to hit theaters March 26, and will include new cast members Seth Green and Alicia Silverstone.
Next, Gellar's scheduled to star in MGM's Romantic Comedy, a satire on several recent romantic comedies that revolves around a lovelorn guy who tries to win a girl's heart using movie-like tactics.
