Geena Davis Shoots for Olympic Gold
In Geena Davis' case, it could be argued that no matter what she wants, what the movie star needs is a hit. Davis herself has a loftier, if equally tricky, goal--she wants Olympic gold.
As an archer.
The 43-year-old, onetime Best Supporting Actress winner is scheduled to compete with 127 other expert bow-and-arrow types at the National Archery Association's Olympic Trials Semifinals, August 22-24 in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
"She's just another shooter," says Kathleen Frazier, from the association's headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. "And that's basically how [the other competitors] look at her."
Geena Davis, of Los Angeles, California, as she was identified, last month placed 29th, with 2404 points, at the 115th National Target Championships in Oxford, Ohio. Though that finish was more than 200 points off pace of the women's champ (Denise Parker, of Salt Lake City, Utah), it was good enough for the actress to make the semifinals cut. The competition's top 32 men and top 32 women, Davis included, moved on to New Jersey.
Davis publicist Paul Bloch says the 6-foot-tall actress, who batted around a baseball in A League of Their Own, took up the sport just two years ago. "She just saw it on television," he says. Specifically, it was the success of young American archer Justin Huish, a double gold medalist at the 1996 Summer Games, that purportedly stoked her fire.
According to the rep, the actress will not be sacrificing her film career for archery. "She's able to do both. She practiced and still did Stuart Little that's due out in the fall," Bloch says, referring to the big-screen version of E.B. White's children's classic that costars Davis and (the voice of) Michael J. Fox.
The Archery Association vouches for Davis' form. Frazier says it makes no matter that the Thelma & Louise firebrand didn't pursue target shooting until her 40s.
"You have to have the discipline that it takes to practice," Frazier says, "and evidently it is a goal of hers."
In Hollywood, Davis' recent moves have been off the box-office mark, with misses like Cutthroat Island (1995), Speechless (1994) and The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) on her résumé. But in archery, she's got a real shot at a direct hit. In the semifinals, Davis will need a top 8 finish to move up to the Olympic trial finals, September in California.
The ultimate mark is the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, otherwise known as the Academy Awards of archery.
Davis took home her Oscar for The Accidental Tourist (1988).
