Geena Davis Misses Mark
The Oscar-winning actress finished 24th in a 28-person field at the U.S. archery team's semifinal competition Saturday in New Jersey--officially ending her bid for a place on next year's Sydney-bound team.
Davis needed at least a 16th place finish to move onto Sunday's round. Despite the setback, the 43-year-old Thelma & Louise star sounded as determined about her newfound sport as, well, Thelma and/or Louise.
"My goal from the beginning--and it continues to be--is just to see how good I can get," Davis told reporters.
"So I'll just keep flinging arrows."
The actress took up the bow-and-arrow game just two years ago--inspired by the archery team's success at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta.
Although a novice athlete, her coach, Don Rabska, at least, already had a pro's excuse at the ready to explain Davis' underwhelming performance.
"It's tough for us because we never get to practice in the rain in California," Rabska told the Associated Press. "It caught her a little off guard."
Although not a veteran jock in real life, Davis played one in the girl-playing baseball flick, A League of Their Own (1992). She took home her Oscar for The Accidental Tourist (1988).
