Game Gets Right with Hurricane
The Game is hoping to head off a flood of bad press before it hits.
In a potential PR nightmare, the platinum-selling rapper, who is nicknamed Hurricane Game by friends for his rapid rise in the hip-hop world, unfortunately chose the "Hurricane" moniker for his new line of sneakers.
While the decision was made months ago, prior to Hurricane Katrina hitting Gulf Coast states, the rapper and his manufacturer are attempting to tweak marketing materials for the shoe before it hits stories Dec. 26. Ads won't mention the word hurricane itself and will instead focus on a swirling "H" logo.
The Compton-based artist, whose debut disc, The Documentary, has sold more than 2 million copies since it was released in January, tells the Los Angeles Times he plans to donate a portion of sales from the fledgling shoe line to charity.
"[The money] will go to help people who lost everything, and that will last until the company ceases to exist or until New Orleans is 100 percent rebuilt," he says.
On Friday, he also announced he will donate a customized 2005 Bentley Continental GT, valued in excess of $250,000, to Morgan Freeman's Charity Folk charity benefiting the American Red Cross.
The Bentley was a gift from shoe company 310 as a perk for the rapper signing an endorsement deal with the California-based manufacturer.
Last month, the rapper claimed he and 310 reps were bounced from the massive Magic Marketplace tradeshow in Las Vegas because staff feared he was somehow connected with the shooting of Marion "Suge" Knight days earlier at an MTV Video Music Awards pre-show party in Miami.
"They were scared there was going to be some drama," he told the Associated Press.
But Magic reps released a statement denying the story, saying the rapper's bodyguards had concealed weapons--a violation of the Las Vegas building code--and had to be escorted from the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Promotional materials for the shoe line, which is expected to include canvas and leather sneakers, will begin rolling out in the coming months.
And what rapper shoe line wouldn't be complete without the requisite rapper feud. The Game's shoe sneakers will go head to head with Reebok's G-Unit sneaks.
The Game used to be a member of 50 Cent's G-Unit posse, before having a public falling out with his mentor. A short-lived truce between Game and Fiddy failed to take. Game supporters have taken his "G-U NOT!" rallying cry to the streets--T-shirts sporting the slogan have been spotted all around his Los Angeles stomping grounds.
Along with his music and shoe business, the Game is seeking to become a Hollywood player. He recently signed on to make his acting debut as a gang lord in the drama Waist Deep, due next year.
