"Friends" Channels "Talk Soup"

It's a rE!union.

Erstwhile Talk Soup hosts Greg Kinnear and Aisha Tyler play former flames on NBC's Friends this season.

Tyler's character, Charlie, has already woven her spell on two-thirds of the show's male segment, Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Ross (David Schwimmer). Now, Oscar nominee Kinnear joins during November sweeps as the funnylady's ex-boyfriend, who also happens to be a brilliant, Nobel Prize-winning scientist.

Things get complicated when the brainy guy considers awarding Ross an important research grant before discovering his ex (Tyler) is shacking up with TV's favorite paleontologist.

For the three people who didn't catch last season's finale: The Friends gang tagged along with Ross and Charlie to a snooze-inducing convention in Barbados. Charlie came with Joey but found she was longing for Ross. Rachel secretly pined for Joey. And the Italian Stallion? Well, he was just happy to get some action.

On tonight's premiere episode of the sitcom's swan-song season the island saga continues as Ross hooks up with Charlie; Rachel and Joey wind up together; and Monica, Phoebe and Chandler overhear the whole thing.

Kinnear got his break dissecting daytime TV on Talk Soup before making the transition to feature films with credits including Sabrina, Nurse Betty and As Good as It Gets, the latter of which earned him Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.

Tyler, meanwhile, was the final host of Talk Soup, which ended its 11-year run in May 2002.

While Friends apparently didn't have room for the other former Talk Soupers--John "Skunk Boy" Henson (who has been developing a new TV project) and Hal Sparks (currently starring in Showtime's Queer as Folk)--the sitcom has been lining up key guest stars for its 10th and final season. Christina Applegate reprises her Emmy Award-winning role as Rachel?s self-centered sis Amy, who is called upon to babysit infant niece Emma in a November episode. Meanwhile, Giovanni Ribisi returns in October as Phoebe's kid brother Frank, who?s overwhelmed by his three precocious triplets.

In related news, Schwimmer has already landed a post-Friends gig. The thesp, who has a two-year development deal with the Peacock network, will develop a TV version of the upcoming book How to Remodel a Man as a half-hour sitcom for fall 2004.

Written by 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter author Bruce Cameron and to be published next year, Remodel pokes fun at the ways men might reinvent themselves when looking to attract the opposite sex.

The TV version will feature a divorced young man who turns to the women in his life for help on reexamining his relationships. Schwimmer would direct but not likely star in the project. He has also expressed interest in helming some episodes of LeBlanc's Friends spinoff Joey.
