Freddy Krueger for Obama!

Barack Obama can count on horror movie master Wes Craven's vote.

The man who created Freddy Krueger and launched the Scream franchise told me this afternoon he's supporting Obama's bid for the White House. He was first impressed by the Illinois senator when he spoke at the last Democratic Convention. "I saw him speak and, along with everyone else, was electrified," Craven said.

I caught up with Craven on the set of On the Lot, the Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett filmmaking reality show. Craven is a guest judge on the next installment of the Fox series, airing tomorrow night.

Craven joked that his plans for the young wannabe directors make Simon Cowell seem like a pussycat. "I'm going to be quite severe," Craven says. "I've insisted on black robes...and perhaps a riding crop."

I suggested that Craven create his own horror-based reality show. Perhaps something like Big Brother with Freddy Krueger thrown into the mix. "Have them stalked by someone?" Craven said. "That's kind of a good idea."

He does note a potential problem, however: "If they lose, they're going to be dead."

Good point.

Speaking of killing, Craven said even he has trouble sometimes sitting through the new crop of horror films. When I mentioned films like Hostel, Disturbia and Grindhouse, Craven said, "They do it in ways that some people find nauseating and disgusting, but that's what the genre has always been doing...I forced myself to go see Hostel. I hate torture. I hate the idea of it. I must say it took me right to the edge of being so disgusted I would leave, but I couldn't stop watching."

For now, Craven looks forward to helping On the Lot find the next possible Wes Craven. "I think it'd be wonderful," he said with a laugh. "I could retire."

Or get rid of the competition. "It could be good for me," he said, "because I could kill that person."

Freddy Krueger would be so proud.
