Fox-Williams Marriage Dunked
Last week, basketball and budding acting star Rick Fox got traded. This week, he put wife Vanessa Williams on waivers.
Fox has filed for divorce from the singer-actress after five years of marriage, his publicist announced Tuesday.
Fox, 35, and Williams, 41, wed in September 1999. They have one child together, a daughter, Sasha, 4.
"They are both extremely devoted parents, so the most important thing to them right now is the welfare of their child," Fox flack Staci Wolfe said in a statement. "They are committed to working out what's best for her."
Williams has three other children from her first marriage. Williams has a son from a previous relationship.
No reason for the Fox-Williams split was given. But any casual reader of the tabloid press should hardly be surprised by their demise.
In June, the National Enquirer quoted Wolfe as saying Fox and Williams "have been headed for divorce for the last 18 months. They've been virtually leading separate lives since then."
Still, after the story, about how the couple was uncoupling after Fox got caught kissing a "sexy blonde" in a Hawaiian nightclub, hit the stands, Wolfe denied divorce papers had been filed.
Rumors that all was not well with Fox and Williams, who costarred as a happily married duo in ads for Radio Shack, persisted for years.
In 2003, the Star busted Fox for "gallivanting" with three blondes at a Hollywood nightclub. His camp denied "any wild partying."
What was undeniable was the distance between Fox and Williams.
Owing to her stints on Broadway, Williams maintained a home on the East Coast. Owing to his rebounding duties with the Los Angeles Lakers, Fox lived on the West Coast.
"It's tough to have a marriage in which you are always anxious about and thinking, 'Okay, when are you going to leave? Let's maximize every moment together,'" Williams told Ebony in 2002.
Ironically, last week Fox was traded from the Lakers to the Boston Celtics, a move which would have put him in closer proximity to his New York-based wife during the season.
But Fox is not expected to play for the Celtics, with most expecting him to retire and pursue acting full-time. Already, he's racked up credits in the 2003 Disney movie Holes and the HBO series Oz.
Williams, who salvaged a multihyphenate career (stage, film, TV, recording) from the scandal of her 1984 Miss America dethroning, was in theaters this spring in Johnson Family Vacation. Her other film credits include Eraser and Shaft.
Williams and Fox began dating in 1998, about a year after she ended her 10-year marriage to Ramon Hervey, her former manager.
