Ford Shoulders Operation

Looks like Indiana Jones is going to have to lay off the derring-do for the next few weeks.

Harrison Ford, who's slated to dust off the old fedora for a fourth go-round as Indiana Jones next year, underwent rotor cuff surgery recently to repair some torn tendons on his shoulder, manager Patricia McQueeney confirmed Tuesday.

Ford, 62, had been spotted in his newly adopted hometown of New York City in a wheelchair with his arm in cast and, according to the New York Daily News, gal-pal Calista Flockhart playing Florence Nightengale.

The operation, which was not the result of any specific injury, was said to be a success.

"He'll be in a sling about a month," McQueeney told E! Online. "It just had been bothering him for awhile and he decided to go get it fixed."

Ford fit the surgery in between films to allow for a proper recovery and is not expected to miss work.

For a guy who's kicked butt as Indy Jones, Han Solo and Jack Ryan, as well as engaged in real-life heroics, the stint in sickbay for a dinged wing is hardly surprising.

Ford has a history of toughing it out. He fell on a prop gun during a stunt for a TV gig early in his career and lost two teeth; he needed surgery following a back injury suffered while doing his own stunts for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom; and he banged up his knee during shooting on The Fugitive, which led him to incorporate a limp into his character's movements. And then there's that famous scar on his chin, which he received in an auto accident.

The creaky thespian, however, plans to whip himself back into shape to reprise the role of dashing (if slightly older) archaeologist Indiana Jones seeking fortune and glory in the long-in-the-works fourth installment of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's blockbuster franchise. That film, currently being written by Frank Darabont, starts shooting next year and is due out in 2005.

Meanwhile, hitting stores Tuesday from Paramount and Lucasfilm is The Adventures of Indiana Jones, a hotly anticipated DVD box set featuring all three Indy movies--Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade--along with a fourth disc of bonus material that includes a two-hour documentary featuring never-before-seen footage and new interviews with Spielberg, Ford, Lucas and other Indiana Jones alums.
