Fleetwood Mac Back at No. 1

The musical Mac attack is back. Almost 20 years to the day after their biggest album Rumours topped the charts, the reunited Fleetwood Mac's latest effort, The Dance, has repeated the feat, debuting at number 1, with sales of 200,000, according to Industry sources.

The album--the group's greatest hits, plus four new songs recorded for an MTV special--blew Puff Daddy out of the top slot for the week ended August 24.

The Mac made a conscious effort to celebrate (and hopefully repeat) the 20th anniversary of their greatest success. Rumours spent 31 weeks on top of the charts in 1977. The lineup responsible for that success (Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood) is back together for the album, the MTV special and an upcoming tour. Even the Mac's current single, the Nicks-warbled "Silver Springs," is actually a B-side from the "Rumours" period.

In spite of the blast from the past, most music observers think the new Mac won't hold the number-one position as long as the old did. Next week, the debuts of both Oasis and Coolio's latest offerings could easily double or triple Fleetwood Mac's sales.

(Flashback time: Trivia buffs may recall that another strife-ridden '70s supergroup, the Eagles, also bowed at number 1 bow with an album mixing new songs and greatest hits recorded for MTV.)

Nostalgic record buyers were out in full force this week. Yet another '70s icon, Billy Joel, debuted in the Top 10, though without the benefit of an MTV session. Joel's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 entered the charts at number 9 this week, with sales of 90,000.

In second place came Puff Daddy and the Family's No Way Out, which sold 167,000 units, off from 186,000 the previous week. The now-seasoned Spice Girls hung on in the third slot, selling 115,000 copies of Spice, while the Men in Black soundtrack slipped a notch to number 4, with sales dropping from 130,000 to 114,500.

Modern rockers Matchbox 20 lit up as their Yourself or Someone Like You charted at number 5, with sales of 100,000. Meanwhile, teen-beaters Hanson won't go away. Fans snapped up 96,000 copies of the brotherly trio's Middle of Nowhere.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Art of War dropped from third to seventh as sales declined from 123,000 to 94,000. Jewel keeps collecting Pieces of You, with an additional 93,000 units in eighth place, followed by Joel in ninth.

Rounding out the top Top 10 was Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing, selling about 86,000 copies.

Prodigy's The Fat of the Land fell out of the Top 10 to number 11. Also plummeting was Latin megastar Luis Miguel, who saw his Romances slip from number 14 to number 32.
