FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, September 8, 2002

SICK BAY: Jerry Lewis bailing on a charity performance Sunday night due to health reasons. The comic icon, who has suffered a long list of maladies over the years, most recently pulmonary fibrosis in the lungs, had been slated to appear at the London Palladium.

SICK BAY: Mellow songsmith Gordon Lightfoot ("If You Could Read My Mind," "Sundown") rushed to a Canadian hospital Sunday for an undisclosed reason. No word on the 63-year-old's condition.

OFF THE ROAD AGAIN: Country great Willie Nelson canceling four Midwest concerts after being treated for a broken blood vessel in his nose. Nelson's expected to resume his tour next week.

GOING GLENN CLOSE: Swimfan, a high-school spin on Fatal Attraction, won the weekend box-office derby with $12.4 million. My Big Fat Greek Wedding finished second with $10.6 million, followed by the new Robert De Niro flick, City by the Sea, with $9.1 million.

GOLDEN: The Magdalene Sisters, director Peter Mullan's drama about whacked Catholic nuns, taking the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday. Julianne Moore was named Best Actress for Far from Heaven, and Italian actor Stefano Accorsi won Best Actor for his role as a poet in A Journey Called Love.

CODA: Lionel Hampton got a jazzed-up sendoff Saturday in New York. Former President George Bush eulogized the late "King of the Vibes," and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis led the funeral procession through Harlem to the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, where Hampton was interred with fellow music masters Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins and Irving Berlin. Hampton died last weekend of heart failure at age 94.

THERE SHE IS. HER, TOO: North Carolina being represented by two hopefuls at this year's Miss America Pageant: reigning Miss North Carolina Misty Dawn Clymer and Rebekah Revels, who says she was forced to step down over a topless photo scandal and is now suing to be reinstated. Both will remain in competition until a federal judge rules on the suit. The annual beauty contest is set for September 21.

ON THE CUTTING-ROOM FLOOR: Producers snipping out the brief shot of the Twin Towers from the opening sequence of The Sopranos. HBO's hit returns for its fourth season September 15.

SMELLS LIKE EXPLOITATION: An Oregon couple offering the childhood home of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain for sale on eBay. So far, no one has met the opening bid of $200,000. The house appraised for about $53,000 just two years ago.

DINO-MITED: The wife of Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton filing for divorce Thursday in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences. Anne Marie Martin Crichton says in court papers the couple has been separated for a year. The petition seeks joint custody of their 13-year-old daughter.

STOCKS AND THE CITY: Sex and the City's Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon to ring the opening bell at the American Stock Exchange on Monday. The actresses are rallying support to benefit children affected by 9-11.

SLAM DUNKLED? The TV show Celebrity Justice reporting that Wednesday night's American Idol finale was the "swan song" for cohost Brian Dunkleman. The show says Ryan Seacrest will be back to host Idol 2 next year, but may do it solo.
