FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, September 18, 2006
BAD BREAK: Lindsay Lohan taken to the hospital in New York Friday after slipping at a Fashion Week party and fracturing her wrist, her rep, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, confirmed. Zelnick told Access Hollywood that "there's a pending investigation" into the incident, because Lohan claimed the venue did not take adequate precautions to prevent spills. For those keeping score at home, it's at least the fifth time in the past year that Lohan's logged time in an ER.
WEDDING BELLS: Aaron Carter popping the question to girlfriend Kari Ann Peniche in Las Vegas Sunday, sources tell E! News. Should make for some added drama on E!'s upcoming reality show House of Carters! (End shameless plug.)
HIGH TIMES: Willie Nelson and four members of his band issued misdemeanor citations for drug possession during a traffic stop Monday, after police pulled over their tour bus and discovered over a pound of marijuana and several ounces of magic mushrooms on board. Talk about a buzz kill.
NO BEEF: The Scotland Daily Record issuing a public apology to Nicole Kidman for attributing negative remarks about Angelina Jolie's charity work to her. The paper acknowledged Kidman never made the remarks. Probably wise--we're pretty sure Jolie could take Kidman any day of the week.
MOURNED: Mariska Hargitay's father, Mickey Hargitay, died Sept. 14, Access Hollywood reports. He was 80. "We are so grateful for who he was and is to all of us, and for the love he gave us in our lives. He will continue to be our source of inspiration and strength," the family said in a statement.
REUPPED: Good news, basic cable fans (whomever you may be). USA Network ordering a second season of Psych and a sixth season of The Dead Zone.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES: The second pathologist to perform an autopsy on Anna Nicole Smith's son, Daniel, stating he could not yet determine a cause of death but ruling out natural causes, including heart disease, stroke or a "congenital anomaly." He also revealed that the 20-year-old was taking antidepressants at the time of his death. Smith's attorney told reporters that the bereaved mother is "doing well, she is getting better."
SAY WHAT?! "My ex-wife once said, 'He's Saddam Hussein.' She said that. And I thought, 'Do I hide myself in cramped underground quarters? Do I like to shoot firearms in a celebratory way? Did I execute whole villages of people and bulldoze their bodies into a pit? What are you saying? Explain this to me.' "
--Alec Baldwin to GQ, on taking Kim Basinger's insults way too literally.
HOW VERY IRONIC: A body washing up on a Miami beach where a crew was filming scenes for CSI: Miami, police said. Just last week, a body was discovered in a Los Angeles building where CSI: New York was filming. Could a marketing scheme be afoot?
WHAT'S IN A NAME? Britney Spears and Kevin Federline naming their newborn son Sutton Pierce, People reports. Sutton, who first greeted the world Tuesday, has the same initials--and hopefully the same trust fund--as big brother Sean Preston Federline.
ACT NOW: Meanwhile, Kevin Federline offering a free autographed photo of himself to the first 500 people who preorder his debut album, Playing with Fire, through his online store. We're guessing Britney's going to wind up with a lot of those headshots sitting around the house.
BACK IN TUNE: The four original members of R.E.M. reuniting for a rare performance Sunday at the band's induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Other inductees included Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri and the late Felice Bryant.

REMEMBERED: Teen actor Pablo Santos, who starred in Greetings from Tucson, dying in a small plane crash in Central Mexico on Saturday. He was 19.
STORK WATCH: Taylor Hanson (aka the middle Hanson) and his wife, Natalie, welcoming their third child, a son, the band announced on its Website.
