The VMAs themselves winning the award for Award Show that Used to Be Fun, But Has Since Jumped the Shark.
LOW NOTE: Jessica Simpson attempting to perform on the Today show Friday, despite a bruised vocal cord, but her voice cracking halfway through her song. Hey, at least she wasn't lip-synching.
PICKING UP THE PIECES: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie vowing to pay frequent visits to New Orleans to observe the process as people work to put their lives back together one year after Hurricane Katrina. Apparently, in lieu of adopting another child right away, they've opted to adopt a city.
PLUGGING THE LEAK: ABC working to have an unauthorized clip from an upcoming episode of Desperate Housewives pulled from YouTube, Daily Variety reports. The scene in question features Bree (Marcia Cross) involved in a mattress romp with new love interest Orson (Kyle MacLachlan). Apparently, it came out prematurely.

NO WEDDING BELLS: Lindsay Lohan's rep denying reports that the actress' current squeeze, Harry Morton, recently shelled out for an engagement ring at Cartier in Beverly Hills. "It's not true," the rep told E! News. Phew--we're not ready for our little Lindsay to take the marital plunge just yet.
ANCHOR AWAY: Bob Schieffer bidding an emotional farewell to the CBS Evening News anchor seat Thursday, as he vacated the desk in preparation for Katie Couric's big debut on Tuesday. It's always sad to be demoted.
PLACE YOUR BETS: Internet bookie BetCRIS.com taking wagers on what kind of ratings Katie Couric will rack up in her first night as CBS Evening News anchor. The gambling site offering 13:2 odds that Couric will pull in more than 8.5 million viewers her first night. We're guessing Brian Williams and Charles Gibson aren't touching that action.
FACE THE MUSIC: Isley Brothers frontman Ronald Isley may face prison time when he is sentenced Friday after being convicted of federal tax evasion. He might be changing his specialty from R&B to singing the blues.
EXITING THE BOARDROOM: Donald Trump firing his Apprentice sidekick Carolyn Kepcher, the New York Post reports, citing sources who said she let fame go to her head, hurting her business savvy. We're just wondering if she got the standard "You're fired," or if Trump took it up a notch. In a statement, Trump said he "wishes Carolyn the best."
DRIVING OFF THE ISLAND: General Motors Corp. deciding to end its sponsorship of Survivor, but claiming the decision had nothing to do with the upcoming season, Race Wars, er, Cook Islands. Meanwhile, Survivor announcing it has secured a new sponsor, but declining to name names.
