FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, November 28, 2000

THE SHOW WILL GO ON: Robert Downey Jr. back on the set of Ally McBeal today following his weekend arrest in Palm Springs on drug possession charges. He still has two episodes to complete before wrapping up his 10-episode commitment to the show.

UN-HAPPY MEAL: Wu-Tang Clan member ODB arrested by Philadelphia police Monday night after going to a local McDonald's for dinner. He was wanted on a warrant issued after he fled a court-ordered drug rehabilitation center in California. ODB was also wanted on two separate charges in New York.

BASTARD ADD: The arrest comes just days after he performed with the group at a record release party in New York and escaped before police could arrest him.

WHO'S CURSED NOW? NBC Entertainment president Garth Ancier telling reporters Tuesday the network is picking up nine more episodes of Cursed. The show was trashed by critics, but it's holding steady on NBC's Thursday-night lineup.

SUNKEN TREASURE? According to preliminary Nielsen ratings, NBC coming in a disappointing second Sunday night as its four-hour screening of Titanic won the coveted 18-49 adult demographic but failed to keep up with ABC's The Santa Clause, which scored first in overall viewers.

WARM APPLE PIE: Chris and Paul Weitz, the brothers behind American Pie, signing on to direct Hugh Grant in About a Boy, adapted from the novel by Nick Hornby. Grant would play a man whose fear of commitment leads him to seek out relationships with single mothers because they're easier to leave.

TAKING A BREAK: The Dixie Chicks announcing they're taking a year off once their current Fly tour ends. Natalie Maines will be staying home with her baby that's due in the spring, while sisters Martie Seidel and Emily Robison plan to work on side projects.

A COSTAR WILL RISE: Requiem for a Dream's Jennifer Connelly in talks to join Russell Crowe in Ron Howard's next picture, Beautiful Mind. Connelly will play the wife of a math genius (Crowe) who suffers from schizophrenia but miraculously recovers to win a Nobel Prize.

GLADIATOR ADD: DreamWorks' double-disc DVD of Gladiator breaking the format's all-time sales record during the Thanksgiving week with more than 3.6 million discs shipped to retailers and nearly 2 million units sold. The studio has earned about $60 million for combined DVD sales and video rentals.

VEGAS BOUND: Casey Affleck and Scott Caan joining the all-star cast of Steven Soderbergh's Rat Pack remake of Ocean's Eleven. The two will play Mormon brothers enlisted to help pull off a Las Vegas casino heist.
