FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, May 17, 2006

HELLO, GOODBYE: Paul McCartney and Heather Mills McCartney separating after four years of marriage. "Our parting is amicable, and both of us still care about each other very much," they said in a statement. Though the couple blamed media intrusion for bringing about the demise of their marriage, we blame the baby seals--those furry little trouble-makers.

GET THE GOODS: MusiCares and the Grammy Foundation selling off items signed by music royalty, including guitars bearing the John Hancocks of B.B. King, The Edge, Slash and Bruce Springsteen in a Grammy Charity Online Auction on eBay. The auction runs through May 25--the perfect time to shop for the dads and grads on your list.

PLAYING IT SAFE: Resting high on its most-watched laurels, CBS launching just four new series for the fall--three new dramas and one comedy. The network renewed 18 of its 2005-2006 shows, including six freshman series.

NOT JUST A BOYFRIEND: Nicole Kidman telling People magazine that Keith Urban is her fiancé, a statement confirmed Wednesday by the country star's publicist, who called the pair "very happily engaged." No word when the pair will wed, but the race is on to see if Nicole will beat Tom to the altar.

ON THE DOWNLOAD: American Idol making a number of the season five contestants' performances available for purchase via AmericanIdol.com for 99 cents a pop or $1.99 for video downloads. That's one way to rescue the Ayla Browns and Gedeon McKinneys of the competition from total obscurity.

SMART BET: Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Jamie Foxx and Mary J. Blige each picking up four nominations for the BET Awards Tuesday. Kanye West earning three nominations, meaning three opportunities to throw a hissy fit, should he happen to lose.

CODE MODE: Cannes film critics panning The Da Vinci Code ahead of the movie's highly anticipated world premiere Wednesday, calling it a "dud," "unwieldy" and "plodding," among other choice criticisms. The Vatican issuing a hearty cheer of "Hell, yeah!" (Or so we'd like to think.)

DOING HIS PART: The Ricky Martin Foundation signing an agreement with the International Organization for Migration to combat sexual exploitation and the trafficking of children. Looks like Martin's livin' la vida, um, of a mature and responsible adult?

HELLO THERE, CHILD! Isaac Hayes, the former voice of South Park's Chef, welcoming a son, Nana Kwadjo Hayes with his wife, Adjowa. The baby was born Apr. 10, per Hayes' rep. We're guessing that's one daddy who sings a mean lullaby.

GOODBYE, KIDS: Lew Anderson, who played the final Clarabell the Clown on The Howdy Doody Show through the series' last episode in 1960, died Sunday of complications of prostate cancer. He was 84.
