FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, June 8, 2006

NO KNOT TYING: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt telling reporters they have no plans to wed anytime soon. "There is nothing in the air. The focus is the kids, and we are obviously extremely committed to the children and as parents together," Jolie said Wednesday. And thank heavens for that--after the monumental arrival of the exalted Shiloh Nouvel, a Jolie-Pitt wedding might be more excitement than the world can handle.

CELEBRITY BABY FACEOFF: After all the drama surrounding the bidding war for the first pictures of Shiloh Nouvel, OK! magazine issuing a rather subdued announcement that it will publish the first pictures of Kingston James McGregor Rossdale. That's right, Gwen Stefani's kid, whose birth was so overshadowed by the arrival of the Jolie-Pitt offspring that no-one has even bothered to leak pictures of him onto the Internet.

PLAYING CATCHUP: CBS hopping on the iTunes bandwagon by making CSI, Survivor and other primetime programming available for download through the iTunes Music Store.

GIRL'S GOTTA SUE: After sticking by William McKnight, the man charged with her attempted murder, through two suicide attempts, a pregnancy and a stint in jail, Mindy McCready finally coming to her senses and suing him for $3 million instead.

NOT READY TO MAKE NICE: Though the Dixie Chicks' Taking The Long Way has topped the charts for the last two weeks, tickets for their upcoming tour have been selling dismally, leading to speculation that much or all of the trek might be canceled or postponed. Our analysis: Bush supporters are okay with the secret shame of listening to the album in the privacy of their own homes, but unwilling to out themselves as fans by attending a concert.

CLOCK'S TICKING: The creators of 24 signing with 20th Century Fox to adapt the show into a feature film that will serve to tide fans over while the series is on hiatus next summer.

STAY AWAY: Lawyers for Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards agreeing Wednesday to a three-week extension of the keep-away order preventing Sheen from coming into contact with his estranged wife. Meanwhile, Heather Locklear's request for an order preventing Richards from coming into contact with Richie Sambora was denied. Not that she really asked for one, but we're betting she'd like to.

COME TOGETHER: Paul McCartney and estranged wife Heather Mills McCartney denying reports that Mills-McCartney had won full custody of the couple's daughter, Beatrice. Said reports were, we imagine, a lame attempt to distract the world from a spread of porn pics starring Mills-McCartney published by London's Sun earlier this week.

DOUBLE THE FUN: Adam Carolla and his wife, Lynette, welcoming twins, a boy named Sonny and a girl named Natalia, on Wednesday. Not common names, sure, but in a Hollywood classroom of Suris, Moseses, Shilohs and so on, the Carolla kids should fit right in.

BUN IN THE OVEN: John O'Hurley and wife, Lisa, expecting their first child together, the actor announced Wednesday, in the apparent belief that somebody cares. Dude, your season of Dancing with the Stars was so last year.

GOOD OMEN: Opening on Tuesday, 6/6/06, proved to be a good omen for The Omen, which took in $12.6 million, the largest Tuesday opening in motion-picture history. Unfortunately, that was pretty much the only good news for the film, which was panned by critics.

KEEP IT CLEAN...OR ELSE: Congress approving legislation to increase FCC indecency fines from $32,500 to $325,000 per incident in the ongoing effort to clear the airwaves of any content deemed obscene or vulgar. Way to go, Janet and Justin.

YOU OUGHTA KNOW: Alanis Morrissette and fiancé Ryan Reynolds parting ways, People reports. For Reynolds' sake, we're hoping she was the one who broke it off; otherwise, we'll be expecting another angry heartbreak anthem sometime in the future.

CODE BREAKER: In an unprecedented move, the Chinese government ordering theaters to stop showing The Da Vinci Code, movie industry officials said Thursday. No word on whether the decision was based on protests about the movie's content or because it just isn't that good.
